A disturbing trend is emerging from the world of veterinary medicine. Some pet owners who are opposed to vaccinations are refusing to allow their pets to be vaccinated for fear of developing autism.
Deadly diseases such as parvovirus, adenovirus and distemper are a part of the vaccinations these so-called ‘anti-vaxxers’ oppose. Sadly, this puts millions of dogs at risk.
Brennan McKenzie, MA, VMD, told American Veterinarian, “Over the last 10 or 15 years, there has been an increase in mostly unfounded concerns about vaccine safety for people. And that, I think, has raised people’s awareness and level of concern about vaccinations for their pets.”
The anti-vaxxers feel that injecting chemicals into their pet will cause problems, but veterinarians worry about the risk to dogs at large.
“When it comes to illnesses such as canine distemper, not vaccinating might pose a risk,” Chris Brockett, DVM, owner of Saratoga Veterinary Hospital in Wilton, New York shared.
The anti-vaccination movement is something we will continue to follow and report back as news emerges. Always have your pets checked by a veterinarian and work with them to protect your animals from diseases.
