The US Coast Guard crew at the Frankfort station was informed about a Yellow Labrador stranded 200 feet away in the icy waters of Betsie Lake, Michigan. The possibly homeless dog had apparently slipped through the ice chunks, and had been struggling to stay afloat for hours.

Some local bystanders were already preparing to get into the dangerous lake to save the dog. But the crew arrived just in time and asked the bystanders to step back as they use their training to attempt this risky rescue. Without sparing another second, 2 crew members donned ice-suits and plunged into the freezing water to save the drowning pooch.

In this arduous rescue video, we see the 2 men meandering their way around the slurpee-like ice chunks to get to the dog. It’s exhausting for them to cover the distance, but they keep pushing away the ice and finally reach the dog. After they secure the weakened pooch, they swim back to the shore with a sense of urgency and get the dog to safety.

The dog, now named Betsie, is recovering at the Benzie County Animal Shelter. She is going to be fine and will be put up for adoption if no one claims ownership over her within the next few days. This Coast Guard crew has won everyone’s hearts with this valiant rescue. We are so proud of these fearless heroes!
