Budi was just a newborn baby orangutan when he was found by a woman in Indonesia. Instead of handing him over to wildlife authorities, the woman decided to keep him as a pet. She locked him up in a tiny chicken cage and began feeding him condensed milk whenever he cried out of hunger.

The woman gradually realized that Budi looked sick, but she was “scared” to feed him solid food. After 10 months, Budi collapsed in his isolated cage due to malnourishment. The woman finally found the sense to call a wildlife rescue before Budi got worse.

The dying Budi endured 10 hours of boat ride to arrive at the “International Animal Rescue” center for emergency care. He was in a critical state as his organs had begun shutting down due to extreme malnourishment. The poor baby screamed with tears in his eyes every time someone touched his aching body.

It was found that Budi’s bones had wasted away and his joints hadn’t even developed due to lack of protein. He couldn’t move, was anemic, and his entire body had swollen up with fluids. He was monitored around the clock and the next few months were brutally agonizing for him.

After fighting so hard for survival, Budi is finally out of danger now. Vets say that his limbs could be deformed forever, and there might be other permanent implications of his initial neglect. But they are positive that Budi will overcome any further challenges with his resilience and spirit! Budi’s heartbreaking story is a reminder that people need to stop their obsession with “exotic” pets.
