When we think of our dogs, we think of all the love we gladly give them. Each meal, each pat on the head, each moment we play with them is another chance to rejoice in that love. It’s beautiful reciprocity – because as we know, they gladly give us all that love back (and then some).

For the dog in this story, he never had the chance to feel loved. But that was all about to change.

His complete backstory is unknown. What the rescuers from the Philippine Animal Rescue Team do believe, since he understood some commands, is that he did at one time belong to someone. What happened next is a mystery. He was found among a pile of trash with ants crawling on his skin. He smelled like he was rotting from the inside out.

The poor dog suffered from advanced mange. He lost nearly all his fur and because his skin was exposed, it hurt him to go into the sunlight. He was all bones as well so lying on the ground hurt too. He found a spot in the shade on top of a pile of garbage, curled up and waited to die.

His rescuers refused to let that happen. He was taken to the vet and treated for distemper and mange. His malnutrition was also addressed. He was put on IV fluids and a high-calorie diet.

Philippine Animal Rescue Team will do everything they can to keep the dog comfortable while he begins to heal. Every day that he makes progress is a win.

Nothing is for certain for this dog, now named Chief. We can’t guarantee he will survive but if he doesn’t we can say that he lived his life FULL of LOVE at the end. He’s worth all the efforts they are putting forth to give him a real fighting chance.

We are beyond thrilled that the Philippine Animal Rescue Team found this precious pup and are working tirelessly to give him a real shot at life.
