A few years ago, a JD and Rachel Aument adopted a loving shelter dog and took him home. They named him Brindle, and the small family has grown extremely close ever since.

But, unfortunately, the past nine months have been hard on Brindle. His dad was deployed overseas to serve as a firefighter in the Army Reserves. Ever since he left, the rescue dog has been missing him terribly.

Even though mom still gives him love and attention, Brindle is nearly inconsolable.

“He’s so sad without him here,” Rachel Marie Aument, JD’s wife, said via The Dodo. “He loves me, don’t get me wrong, but I’m not his. . .   Click To Continue Reading This Story. . .

Xander, the other family dog, misses dad, too. With Brindle, though, it’s different. Xander is a momma’s boy, while Brindle just wants to be close to dad.

Brindle would spend afternoons crying and staring out the front window, looking for dad to pull into the driveway. That’s when JD decided to send his little guy the best gift ever in the mail.

JD took an unwashed shirt from where he was stationed abroad and sent it back home.

Once the package arrived, mom carefully let Brindle open it up. The pup immediately knew the gift inside was for him. It was covered in dad’s scent…and his reaction was priceless!

When Brindle caught JD’s scent, the pup was overwhelmed with joy. He could barely contain his happiness as he sniffed and rolled in his dad’s t-shirt.

“He immediately knew that it was JD’s shirt. There was no doubt about it.”

Brindle loved the gift so much, he wouldn’t let the shirt leave his side. He carried it up to bed with him and snuggled into it. That simple gift meant the world to him.

Fortunately for Brindle, this four-legged best friend won’t have to wait much longer to see his dad.  He might not know it, but JD will be home in a month!

Brindle’s reaction is just another reminder that dogs truly are man’s best friend. Their unconditional love is so strong, it could melt even the coldest of hearts!
