Dillan is an overweight Asiatic Black Bear who has spent the past few decades as a neglected captive of the Union County Sportsmen’s Club in Pennsylvania. He was kept in a tiny concrete enclosure without adequate water, just 200 feet away from a shooting range.
Sadly, the depressed bear developed a slew of health problems owing to his captivity. Wildlife activists were horrified to find Dillan screaming and begging for freedom from his prison every day.
With declawed limbs, rotting teeth and bleeding gums, it was evident that the poor bear was living his worst nightmare each day. When actor Alec Baldwin learned about Dillan’s pathetic state, he wrote a letter to the governor of Pennsylvania demanding the bear’s release.
After Alec’s gesture, many wildlife organizations joined in the crusade and demanded help for Dillan. The Club was eventually forced to hand over the sick bear to “The Wild Animal Sanctuary” in Keenesburg.
The sanctuary workers are now working up a health plan to deal with Dillan’s multiple medical issues. After Dillan’s health is regulated, he will be shifted to a huge sanctuary in southern Colorado that is the home to another Asiatic Black Bear.
Rescuers believe the natural habitat at the 40-acre sanctuary would help him lose weight. It’s disturbing to think that many wild animals are still being held captive for sport.
Let’s raise our voices against this blatant abuse of captive wild animals!
