Foster Cheryl Pietromicca had just brought a new Boxer puppy into her home who was rescued from a puppy mill three weeks ago. The dog was still scared and unsure of the world, but she needed to go to the vet. Mom had to carry Gracie into the building, but as soon as her hatch released, the dog was off and running.
Later on in the day, a witness spotted the dog in the Ellicott Creek clinging onto a tree branch with all of her might. They called 911, and the Cheektowaga Police arrived on scene with patrolman James Rutkowski taking the lead.
Another patrolman, Troy Blackchief, showed up and joined his fellow officer in the waters for rescue. They were able to lift the dog safely out of the creek with the help of animal control, and the whole thing was caught on the officer’s body cam. Gracie was returned to her owners who ended up getting her back to the vet for a checkup.
“They are absolute heroes, I cannot express in words how thankful we are. They went above and beyond in every way,” Cheryl Pietromicca told WGRZ.
