When David Kareken and his family went on a camping trip to the Boundary Waters area of Canada’s Quetico Provincial Park, little did they know their fun family trip would turn out to be the stuff of nightmares.

David’s family doesn’t fear the waters, as both David and his wife are raft guides and kayak instructors in North Carolina. So they took their son Zachary and their 7-year-old dog, Kali, to Rebecca Falls. The whole family had been on dozens of camping trips, and this was just like any of them.

That is until Kali slipped and fell in the powerful rapids. The family watched in horror as Kali got swept away by the violent waters. David and his wife tried to react as fast as they could, but the rapids were too extreme and Kali was taken with it.

Having searched the park for hours, the family was heartbroken and assumed Kali had drowned. They returned to their home in Asheville, North Carolina, not knowing how they would cope with the loss of their beloved pet.

But two weeks later, a miracle happened! David got a call from the park saying they had found a dog matching Kali’s description. The dog was alive and well and had survived by jumping on to a small island and surviving on her own.

She was flown back to the mainland and David drove all the way back to the park to be reunited with her. It took a moment for Kali to come to her senses when she saw David, but the moment she recognized him, she laid kiss after kiss on him. What a happy ending!
