Everyone says they have the best dog in the world, and they are all correct. However, Maggie isn’t your typical canine; in fact, her journey from rags to riches is quite spectacular. Maggie has an amazing personality, terrific disposition, and is as cute as a button, but like all stray dogs, she had a rough start in life. She was found wandering the streets of Long Island in New York.
A Pit Bull/Belgian Malinois mixed breed, she was adopted out twice and twice returned to the shelter. Families complained Maggie had too much energy, so they simply returned her. That’s when the Southern Tier Police Canine Association got involved. The association finds shelter dogs, trains them, and places them at no cost with police departments in need.
These days, K9 Maggie works with her partner, Officer Pike, of the Owego Police Department in New York. Most dogs who serve alongside human officers are shipped to the states from overseas and may cost in the range of $10,000, but Maggie is no ordinary dog. Officer Pike says Maggie is the best and jokes he probably won’t want to work with a human partner again, as he and K9 Maggie have formed an incredible bond.
Sergeant Rick McCulskey, the President of the Southern Tier Police Canine Association says it “takes a unique dog to go from being an orphan to somebody who goes to Disneyland every day with her partner.” We wish K9 Maggie all the best in her new amazing life.
