Animal abuse of any kind of absolutely deplorable, but what authorities discovered a sadistic man doing in Round Rock, Texas, will make you sick to your stomach.

The man, who was well aware of what he was doing, attached his Bull Terrier to his pick-up truck with a leash and dragged him down a busy road, nearly killing the poor dog in the process.

There were even witnesses to 28-year-old Zager Yuseth Zelaya-Rubio’s vile crime; from a distance, onlookers saw Zager tether Champ to his truck using a leash. Then, without any warning, he began to pull the helpless pup down the street.

Panicked Good Samaritans followed the truck and called the authorities. After a short stretch of road, Champ’s leash broke and he was spit out onto the side of the road, broken and bleeding.

Thankfully, officers were then able to arrive on scene quickly; they were able to stop the bleeding, but had to get the dog emergency care quickly.

He had bones protruding from his skin, as well as large burns and lacerations all over his body.

“It was severe, severe injuries and traumas, not only to its paws, but its hind legs as well,” said Officer John Schultz with the Round Rock Police Department said via KXAN. “Just because he’s an animal, that’s no different than the same care we would give a human being if we saw those injuries.”

The terrible abuse that Champ suffered at the hands of his heartless owner nearly killed him — but it didn’t kill his spirits. Although he is now under the supervision of the Williamson County Animal Shelter and is recovering from the medical procedures, he is keeping a good attitude the best he can.

Vets and volunteers have been giving Champ attention, affection, and plenty of treats. The dog is still in critical condition and requires round-the-clock care, but it seems that he may just survive this terrible ordeal.

The authorities believe that Champ’s owner was aware of the condition of his dog and what was happening as he pulled him down the road (although he denies knowing where he dog is). Witnesses even saw him react when the dog was run over by the truck.

The shock of this animal abuse has rippled throughout the community; people can even see Champ’s bloody paw prints at the spot that police officers attempted to give him medical attention.

Zelaya-Rubio is now facing felony charges, specifically cruelty to non-livestock animals. The cruel man responsible for this innocent dog’s terrible injuries will not get away with this heinous crime.

“Champ needs medical attention 24/7 and he needs a watchful medical eye and this is going to continue for a few days until we feel comfortable that he does not need that type of care,” the community programs coordinator for the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter told KXAN. Although his condition is still fragile, Champ should be able make a full recovery.

Hopefully, the animal shelter and volunteers will help this poor pup find a home here he will be loved, taken care of, and can forget the terrible abuse he suffered at the hands of a monster.
