When Jim and Judy Cooper from Sandy, Utah, adopted a puppy, they had no idea what that dog would eventually do for them. In fact, a week after bringing the fuzz ball home, they even considered returning her.

Thankfully, they kept her…and, as a thank you, she saved her 82-year-old father’s life.

The Australian Shepherd / Heeler mix puppy named Thibodeau, without any kind of formal training, somehow knew exactly what to do when a life-threatening situation arose.

One fateful night, Judy awoke because of a strange noise in the bedroom. She heard a whining; thinking it was her husband having a bad dream, she called out to him.

She didn’t hear an answer, so Judy rolled over and turned on the light. What she saw completely horrified her.

Jim was motionless, in distress, with their puppy lying on his chest. Something was terribly wrong — and Thibodeau was whining, staring directly at his face.

Judy called 911 and he was rushed to the hospital. As it turns out, he was having a stroke and somehow their puppy was able to detect it and wake up his wife.

Fortunately, the stroke Jim experienced wasn’t fatal. Because doctors were able to work quickly thanks to Thibodeau’s early warning, Jim was able to recover and was sent home.

The Coopers were so close to returning their sweet puppy after adopting her, but it didn’t take the fur baby long to prove how important she would be in their lives. She was intent on doing whatever she could to keep her family safe; if it wasn’t for her, Jim could have easily died in his sleep from the stroke.

Our precious pets do so much more for us than we know. Every day, we should be thankful of the companionship, love, and protection they provide us!
