What you are about to read is not science fiction, but a slice of reality ripped from the daily headlines. Over 50 polar bears in a group of islands north of Russia are invading the town of Novaya Zemlya. A state of emergency has been declared as a result.
Most alarming is why the polar bears have moved inward: climate change. Because the Arctic Sea ice has shrunk back, polar bears are moving to land to hunt for food.
Both people and animals are at risk of the invading polar bears moving into their space.
Deputy head of the local administration, Aleksandr Minayev, told The Siberian Times, “People are ‘afraid to go outside’ and ‘daily life is in turmoil.”
The polar bears are chasing people, entering residential buildings, and fear is everywhere. A team of specialists is headed to the town. A request to shoot the bears has been denied by the Russian Nature Protection Agency.
Witness one of the bears entering a building with people in it below. This is very alarming.
