Puppy mills are horrendous. So many poor animals who end up there are unhappy at best, but many times the result is worse.

This poor abused dog was terrified of everything. Most Labradors can’t stand still for more than 10 seconds and are very sociable dogs. This one, however, did not do well around strangers. She wouldn’t walk beside people, but behind them. If anyone would get close to her, show would drop to the floor.

Esther the abused Labrador needed a lot of work. But don’t worry, this story has a happy ending.

Luckily, there’s a wonderful program that brings together dogs and inmates. The prisoners help rehabilitate dogs and domesticate them so they can be adopted later. Some pooches end up as service dogs.

The inmates train many  dogs, and luckily for Esther, she got a very caring handler. This sweet Labrador was sent to the Trinidad Correctional Facility in Trinidad, Colorado for her rehab.

In just a few weeks, you could see the huge change in her demeanor. She went from a very shy dog to a playful and healthy dog. The program was a huge success.

The inmate put a lot of work into helping the poor Labrador. He was very sad to see her go, but his work has assured Esther of a much better life.
