When 19-year-old Ryan Sesselman walked into a PetSmart holding an adoption event, he wasn’t expecting to fall in love. But, as soon as he laid eyes on an fuzz ball shepherd mix, he knew she had to go home with him.
Unfortunately, Ryan would have to do some legwork before adopting the sweet baby — he had to convince his mother.
The Sesselman household already had two dogs, so adding a third could have been a bit tricky. Thankfully, Ryan was clever enough to create a scheme that would help convince his mother to adopt the pup.
He texted her, asking how many retweets on Twitter he would need in order to take the little girl home with him.
“I asked my mom how many retweets it would take to convince her,” said Ryan via The Dodo. “I suggested 10,000 – thinking that’s a lot and she will agree. She then replies, ‘One million.’”
With only 200 followers on Twitter, one million retweets would be a difficult goal to achieve. Still, Ryan refused to let that stop him from trying; he would do anything to bring the little lady home.
So, he sent the tweet. No on expected for the post on Twitter to go viral — not even Ryan.
“I posted it that afternoon, and when I woke up the net day I had 222 retweets and was impressed. The entire day my friends and I, who went and saw her yesterday, were just watching the retweets go up and up and up,” Ryan told he Dodo. “I woke up the next day and it had 149,000 retweets, which I couldn’t believe. It was unreal to me that 149,000 people retweeted it, and then it just spread so much faster after that. In four days, I got one million retweets, making it the 10th most retweeted tweet of all time.”
Not only did the dog lover meet the goal that he and his mother agreed to, he broke countless retweet records! The viral post became insanely popular, everyone wanted to see the Sesselman family adopt the sweet puppy.
Even though Ryan’s mom couldn’t believe that he got one million retweets, she held up her end of the bargain.
She was glad she did, too, because as soon as she met the little pup…she was head-over-heels in love!
They immediately filled out the adoption forms and were able to take the sweet puppy home with them the very same day.
Ryan named her Millie and, soon enough, she was a permanent, beloved part of the family.
It didn’t take long for the shepherd mix to grow up into a big, beautiful girl. She loves to play with her furry siblings, but also adores cuddle time with her human counterparts, as well.
If only she knew how famous her adoption was!
It’s already been a year since Millie was originally adopted. She and Ryan are still inseparable.
He even created an Instagram account just for her, that way the countless people online that supported her adoption can see how happy she is in the Sesselman home.
