One of the worst days of a pet parent’s life is the day when we must say goodbye to our precious furbabies. Heidi Weber experienced the feelings of grief that come with losing a dog when her beloved Beagle, Ruby, passed away. Ruby lived a long life and passed away at 18 years of age. Heidi didn’t intend on rescuing another dog anytime soon, but fate had other plans.

“I did not plan to adopt another dog for a while. I lost my other dog in March 2020, and Ruby helped me get through that loss plus the pandemic,” Heidi shared. “She was a good friend.”

Heidi happened to be scrolling through Instagram on the day her beloved Beagle, Ruby, passed away. She was on the Instagram page of animal advocate Beth Stern, and saw a beautiful Labrador Retriever mix named Ruby. The 11-year-old dog was surrendered to an animal shelter after one of her owners died, and the other was too weak to care for her.

“We are still accepting applications for Ruby, the sad 11-year-old lab mix whose owner just passed away. She waits all day and night for her human to come and get her, and it’s utterly heartbreaking,” Stern wrote in the post on Instagram, which caught Heidi’s eye.

Heidi decided to fill out an application and try to adopt Ruby. After driving to the shelter and spending an hour with Rudy the Lab mix, Heidi knew she had to adopt her.

“One of my favorite quotes is ‘You never know what’s coming for you,’ and in the case of Ruby and me, I do not think either of us knew what was going to happen,” Heidi shared.

Congratulations on your new furbaby, Heidi. We wish you a long, happy, healthy life together.
