A couple from Amsterdam are experiencing any dog parent’s worst nightmare: their beloved pup has gone missing…and she is thousands of miles away.
Gale is a prize-winning American Staffordshire Terrier that has disappeared at the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International airport, one of the busiest airports in the country.
Her parents, the Van Essens, live in Amsterdam, but she was being shown in the United States one final time. Then, Gale happily retired.
The Van Essens flew home first. Then, Gale and her handlers were to board a flight with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and follow them back home for good.
Right before the handlers themselves boarded the plane, something went terribly wrong. Flight staff informed them that Gale’s kennel was found empty when the crew was loading luggage onto the plane. Panicked, the handlers immediately called Gale’s owners.
The Van Essens have contacted the airport, the airline, and even the baggage handler. Unfortunately, nothing has helped locate the poor, lost pup.
“We were out of our minds. You can imagine it’s horrific to hear that a dog is gone and nobody knows where she is,” Floris Van Essen said via ABC News.
Airport officials, police officers, and even wildlife biologists have been attempting to find Gale. However, she hasn’t even been seen since Monday morning at 3:30am EST.
“The dog somehow got out of the crate and is now running around the airfield,” said a spokesperson for Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport via ABC News. It doesn’t sound like a complex area to search, but finding Gale in the airfield won’t be easy. There are over 4,600 acres of land for her to hide in. Not only that, but the noise and commotion from the airport might frighten Gale, causing her to run from her rescuers.
In such a busy area, something disastrous could happen without anyone knowing. Let’s hope the authorities and volunteers at the Atlanta airport work quickly to find her!
