You never know what you’re going to find when you’re gardening, but most people would never expect to find a litter of abandoned puppies! That’s the surprise Craig Mcgettrick had when he was helping with a neighborhood clean up. But he was in for an even bigger surprise.
Concerned that the puppies were abandoned and knowing they would never survive he and his friend Beccie brought them to safety at nearby Freshfields Animal Rescue. Then, they took to Facebook to see if anyone could help.
Sometime after the photos began to circulate on Facebook, Beccie was concerned they might be fox cubs. She then contacted Martin Hemmington, founder of the National Fox Welfare Society and her hunch was in fact right!
But why would a fox mom leave her babies to starve? They were so young!
“Vixens leave their cubs all the time whilst they are in the den, and as they get older they’ll begin to explore their surroundings more and more, and become less dependent on mum as they get older.”
Martin Hemmington returned the cubs back to their den.
“I didn’t give the cubs any milk in order for them to be hungry so they’d cry out and call for their mum, which they did,” Hemmington said. “I put them around the same place they were found, as I knew the mum would be looking for them, and she’d be checking the place she last had them.”
By nightfall, the cubs were back with mom and all was right in the garden. So sweet!
