It’s always a great feeling when the underdog wins. It’s an even better feeling when that underdog is, well, a dog. At the Weiner Dog Races held in Minnesota, 72 dogs competed for the trophy. The champion who stole the show was Ringo, a three-legged Dachshund who competed against dogs with four legs.
The pups took to the track in between horse races. These fun, short races are less about the actual speed and more about the fun. Many times, the racing Dachshunds will go off course and run over to visit onlookers or their owners, who are cheering along.
As the stubby-legged cuties lined up at the gates, the announcer signaled for the race to begin, and off they went! As you watch the video, the announcer can be heard saying, “Dexter, what are you doing? Don’t bite the announcer!” Of course, Dexter the dog was just being friendly and he veered off course to say hello.
There are two contenders who take the lead, and it’s a close race until Ringo, the three-legged superstar, takes the lead and crosses over the finish line to his ecstatic mom.
Watch the paw by paw, play by play, of this underdog turned champion in the video below. Way to go, Ringo!
