The miracle of birth is truly a magical thing, whether it be humans or animals. It’s not every day that we get to witness a tiger give birth, so this video from the Australia Zoo is so amazing to watch!

One of their tigers, Kaitlyn, gave birth to two male cubs, but the birth was off to a worrisome start. When the first tiger cub came out, he wasn’t moving and took a gasp of air. Zoo staff gathered around to watch, praying that the little newborn cub would survive.

That’s when Kaitlyn’s motherly instincts kicked in. She began licking the little cub over and over again, which would stimulate his lungs and get the air circulating, allowing him to breathe on his own. Eventually he took a full breath and was breathing like he was supposed to! He even let out a loud cry that sent a wave of relief to staff.

Next it was time for the second baby to come out. He came out wriggling and crying and was healthy from the get-go. Thankfully, the first cub is doing well and Kaitlyn is doing a great job at mothering them. If it weren’t for her, her first baby may not have survived!

Unfortunately, the Sumatran tiger is critically endangered with just 400-600 left in the wild. Conservationist programs, like the one caring for Kaitlyn, keep a close eye on their tigers to make sure they give birth to healthy cubs. Luckily, they’re now two cubs closer to saving the breed!
